Pottery classes in Antoinette's studio

We are welcoming full-time membership as well as students in the studio.
Antoinette presents in-person ceramic classes in her pottery studio in Saltillo Mississippi. She has more than 40 years experience in clay and helped many potters to climb the ladder to success. If you know nothing about clay and would like to learn about pottery, she can guide you thru all the different stages. If you are a potter who do not have a studio, but need a place to work, contact Antoinette. If you are advanced in ceramics and need a challenge, come and join her in the studio.
You can choose if you want do wheel throwing or hand building with clay.

Adult pottery classes - beginners to advance
$250 for 6 weeks 
Thursday mornings or Tuesday evenings
What is included in the class?
  • 2.5 hours training per week.
  • Wheel throwing and / or hand building tutoring.
  • 10lb clay per student. Extra clay is available at $2 per pound. 
  • Glazing and firing of all items made.  
  •  Access to the studio to practice when classes are not in session, or when space is available.
  • For student's own account: Pottery tools and specialty colorants (with the approval of studio instructor).
  • Only 8 students allowed per class session.

Lesson plan for beginners

Wheel throwing

​​Week 1
Student learns to wedge clay, throw and center clay on the wheel, open the clay on the wheel and practice to pull the clay up in a cylinder.
Week 2
Finish the pieces made the previous week. 
Week 3
Learn how to pull and attach a handle to the mug and decorate it with clay.
 Week 4
Learn how to throw a bowl
Learn how to decorate with slip
​Week 5
Trim and finish bowl professionally. Decorate and finish all outstanding projects.
The work will go into the kiln after this class. Take care of all burrs and unfinished work.
Week 6 - decorating
Decorate and glaze

Hand building

​​Week 1
Student learns to wedge clay, pinching technique, joining clay and professional finishing. 
Week 2
Create a soft slab and use a template to form mugs. Alter the form and add texture.  
Week 3
Add handles, define the rims of the mugs, finish mug smoothly, and apply personal touches.
Learn how to decorate the mug with clay.
Week 4
Learn how to prepare slabs that will allow for uniform building of boxes or other more sided shapes.  Precision cutting.
Week 5
Assemble, level and decorate the slab project.

Decorate and glaze

The pottery wheel is just another tool to master.
​Anything that can be made on the wheel, can be hand built too.
​​Only materials provided in the studio will be allowed.
We will try to let students think outside of the box, to let go and "make lemonade from lemons".
