Hands-on Porcelain Workshops in
Antoinette's Studio

Porcelain is the language of the week-long workshop. In the small-group setting of my Saltillo, Mississippi studio, I work with an eclectic group of potters, ranging from those relatively new to porcelain to others who have worked with it for years and want to refine their skills and explore the material on a different level. Working together allows everyone to learn from the questions, discoveries and experiences of the group.

What Can You Expect From a Studio Workshop?

My workshops are not simply about learning a series of techniques. I want potters to understand how porcelain behaves—how it responds to water, the different stages of drying, how far it can be pushed, and what happens as the work moves through glazing and firing. Understanding these characteristics makes it easier to recognize problems, make informed decisions and develop a relationship with the clay.

Demonstrations include wheel throwing and handbuilding, altering and carving, working toward translucency, and the design considerations that help bring a form together. We look at proportion, movement and visual flow as well as technique, because knowing how to make something is only part of understanding why a form succeeds.

Problems that arise during the making process become part of the learning. Cracking, warping, deformation and other porcelain faults give us opportunities to understand what happened and how they may be prevented or corrected.

My demonstrations provide a starting point from which I encourage potters to experiment and explore their own ideas. They can use their newly gained knowledge to develop forms and processes that reflect their individual experiences and artistic direction.

Preparing for a Studio workshop

Participants are encouraged to bring the tools they normally use in their own studios. If you are flying to Mississippi and need to travel light, basic studio tools will be available to use during the workshop.

A materials list with suggested tools and supplies is available below. If you have questions about what to bring, please contact me before purchasing additional tools or materials.

Inside Antoinette's Porcelain Workshops

Antoinette started her first Saltillo, Mississippi studio workshop in 2019, and since then she has had the privilege of teaching potters from across the United States and even from abroad. Every group is unique. The questions, discoveries and exchange of ideas between potters are always an important part of the workshop experience.

The images and video below offer a glimpse into some of these workshops.

As potters work side by side, peaceful conversation and the exchange of ideas become a natural part of the workshop experience.
