Workshop Proposals for Studios, Schools and Ceramic Organizations

My workshops are designed to help potters understand the character of porcelain while developing the skills and confidence to work with it successfully.

For hosted workshops, I offer five-day hands-on workshop programs as well as concentrated shorter workshops, focusing on selected aspects of working with porcelain. Depending on the format, workshops may focus on wheel throwing or handbuilding.

I work with the host to develop a program that fits the experience of the participants, the facilities available and the particular interests of the group. Throughout these workshops, I also pay attention to altering, design and decoration.

Workshop Proposals

5 Days Hands-On Porcelain Workshops

My five-day workshops offer time for demonstrations, guided practice, discussion and individual assistance while participants develop a better understanding of how porcelain behaves. These workshops can focus on either wheel throwing or handbuilding, allowing enough time to explore the chosen approach in depth.

3 Days Porcelain Workshop

Shorter workshops, focusing on either porcelain handbuilding or porcelain wheel throwing, can be developed around a particular process or area of interest. These concentrated workshops combine demonstrations, discussion and hands-on practice within a shorter format. Current options include a 3-Day Wheel-Throwing Porcelain Workshop, with other formats available depending on the interests of the group and the facilities of the host.

Extended Programs

For hosts interested in a longer program, an extended workshop can be developed that combines wheel throwing and handbuilding.

What Can a Porcelain Workshop Include?

Each workshop is shaped around the time available, the experience and interests of the participants, and the facilities of the host studio. Depending on the format, topics may include:

Understanding the character of porcelain and how it behaves
Clay preparation and working methods
Wheel throwing or handbuilding, depending on the chosen workshop
Trimming, refining and altering forms
Developing form and design

Carving and techniques for working toward translucency
Drying and handling porcelain successfully
Understanding common faults and possible remedies
Glazing methods suitable for porcelain
Glaze fit, firing and cooling considerations

Planning a Workshop Together

Every group and teaching situation is different. Before the workshop, I work with the host to discuss the experience of the participants, the facilities available and any particular areas of interest.
For a five-day workshop, we will decide whether Wheel-Throwing Porcelain or Handbuilding Porcelain is the most suitable pathway for the group. We can also discuss the porcelain clay available at the venue, firing possibilities, equipment and any special needs that may affect the workshop.
For international workshops, I often coordinate more than one teaching opportunity during the same trip. This can help make international travel more practical and keep travel costs reasonable for the participating hosts.

Workshop Fees and Arrangements

Workshop fees and practical arrangements are discussed individually with the host. These may include the teaching fee, travel, accommodation, meals, local transportation and any workshop-related expenses.

Once the workshop format, dates and facilities are established, I can provide the host with the information needed for planning and preparing the studio.
