I think the way the course is laid out that it needs to be made clear at the beginning that Antoinette does not typically use paper clay or fibers in most of her work. I did not get this until she started working on her envelopes in the final videos. In general I was happy with the course and it helped me to understand the limitations and possibilities that porcelain has over other clay bodies. Also the supporting needed during firing was a new concept for me.
Comments about the teacher.
I was happy with Antoinette's descriptions and visual tutorials.

I really loved taking this class. It was a lot of information and Antoinette was amazing and thorough while answering my questions via email. I learned a lot of new techniques and though there were a couple things I was not able to do yet, such as making plaster casts, I feel I now have enough knowledge to undertake these things.
Comments about the teacher.
Wonderful. Made learning fun.
Do you have any suggestions?
None. Thank u

Antoinette is a delightful, caring individual and an amazing ceramic artist. You will feel like she is your personal coach and friend during this course. This course from TeachinArt provides wonderful information about porcelain and ways to strengthen your ceramic efforts. I loved the music and artistic setup of the videos. The videos were pleasant and informative, and Antoinette’s interactions with her audience and at times her husband make you smile while listening. I really enjoyed this course, learned a lot, and plan on taking several additional courses. The course was well organized with video and written information, and the opportunity to have an additional 3 weeks extended access to the video and written materials is ideal. Antoinette’s husband, Koos Badenhorst was the technical expert who kept everything online working efficiently. They were both very responsive to any questions or concerns. TeachinArt is great!
What our students say about the classes
Evelyn Foreman (Hawaii)
Antoinette, I wanted to tell you that I had a moment of healing when I trimmed the inside of my porcelain bowl for the 1st time today.
I was told to never trim to the edge and never EVER trim the pots right side up. And that if I was caught doing it, I’d get “thrown out of the class.” As an adult I know that was spoken in jest, but it really made me retract from developing “real” proficiency in trimming.
I was always timid with it, like a person who is afraid of dogs would be timid around a dog.
I think I had a bit of PTSD as I felt pensive, scared and stuck for a bit
Well, I finally did it today - I dared to trim ... I trimmed all over like you showed in your videos, and especially loved doing the inside. ...and oh my goodness - it felt to liberating!!!
I compared it to the work I made prior to taking your class and the pots feel like they are from different planets, different makers.
Not only did the trimming turn out successful, I had a emotional break through - like I walked a tight rope for the 1st time, didn’t fall off and lived to tell about it!! Thank you!
Thank you for giving me courage without even knowing, and a means to have an honest relationship with this diva (porcelain) ... and with my inner diva.

I'm your student from "Understanding porcelain" course and I just wanted to say thank you fot this amazing opportunity to learn online, because there's no way I could ever find something like that in my city or even in my country. I know I've been very quiet all this time, but this is only because your course is so full of information: each time I had a question I immediately found the answer in your files or videos.
Elizabeth Recsy (Switzerland)
I’m very happy that I’ve found your excellent courses. For me every video teaches new things or answers the questions I had. You’re very detailed in your explanations and that’s a huge help for someone like me, with no previous knowledge. (Colored clay with Curtis Benzle)
Curtis Benzle (TeachinArt instructor - Alabama, USA)
I just today heard from a former student who had recently taken an “in-person” workshop with a different artist and the announcement was made that the teacher would not repeat herself(really!) and there were no pictures allowed. Compare that to TeachinArt, where you are encouraged to ask any question until you understand the answer AND you can go over the video time and time again. I am so happy to be part of the TeachinArt program!
Brenda Wolf (Canada)
Antoinette is an amazing instructor. I took her online porcelain class as well as a live one and learned invaluable techniques that I use on daily basis with any clay. I would highly recommend this class to beginners! (Pottery for beginners)
Nancy Murnyack (Ohio, USA)
This has been the best e-course I have ever taken. Antoinette and Koos, both were very approachable and thorough. When I had a specific problem with throwing, Antoinette was right on the problem, requested I make a video of myself throwing and had plenty of advice and encouragement.
The things I appreciate the most in the Understanding Porcelain course are:
1. Antoinette takes the time to explain the whys along with the hows.
2. The course is very organized.
3. There is a lot of information packed into every lesson.
4. Both videos and printouts cover each lesson.
5. Both Antoinette and Koos are very personable; making you feel like a friend, rather than a distant student.
I would recommend this course for everyone!

I have just finished watching the pinch pot teapot classes and wanted to say how informative they are and how much I enjoyed it. I feel I have learned so very much and wish to thank you for sharing your knowledge. I think your class was excellent value, thank you
Glenda Simpson (Georgia, USA)
Antoinette, you teaching is so clear and easy to understand. I am throwing better than I ever have.
Ann Richards (England)
I am absolutely loving the course - thank you. My throwing and trimming has really improved over the last four weeks.
Elizabeth Recsy (Switzerland)

This e-class is just EXCELLENT. The content is fabulous, and the instruction is so in-depth, yet easy to understand. Your wife is very charming too! I am half-way through and so excited to have been able to finally watch the videos. I will definitely buy more classes from the two of you in the future!
Janice Shack-Marquez (Virginia, USA)
Antoinette Badenhorst, I would never have believed that I could throw five bowls that look so much alike and that are beautifully thin. Your class is terrific!
Amanda Pinkas (Isreal)
Thank you for the fantastic e-course! So much very practical and useful info!!! I absolutely adore Antoinette and Koos!!! Antoinette is a total delight, and very approachable and helpful!! Thank you for your generosity of spirit and your humor.
Deb Davis (Canada)
Enjoyed the class. Got some really good throwing tips and was challenged to push beyond my comfort zone. Loved Nan's honesty. She was a real help when I asked questions and I would definitely take another of her courses.
Isabel Magalhaes (Germany)
I am really enjoying the online course with David and learning a lot. David has a wonderful way of explaining and showing what works for him. I enjoy very much his way of explaining and great interesting unique suggestions ... such as the bamboo tool. I appreciate very much his long detailed feedbacks. Very stimulating. Great reviews of the week
Anne Davey (New Hampshire, USA)
I love handbuilding and have learned so much already. There are so many little hints and tips in the videos - I am finding them very helpful.
Ann Kenworthy (Massachusetts, USA)
Hi Nan, Even though I've been potting for years, you exceeded my expectations. I didn't need the throwing basics, but it was good to review. Your teaching is excellent, and the tips! When I got to wiggle wires I swooned. I'm going to have my brother send me all kinds of fishing line and a dozen dowels (pre-drilled) so I can make my own.
Josias Amaral (UK)
Hi Antoinette, your course is brilliant. I certainly will do the other courses as well.
Sarah Hildebrandt (Texas, USA)
Miss Antoinette, I wanted to thank you and your husband for all the hard work that y'all have put into making this platform for learning ceramics. I really enjoyed that your personality came through while you were instructing, the lessons were by no means mundane & I certainly was never board. You included great tips and tricks along with pushing me to think outside the box in my throwing and altering.
Kate Ellin (New Zealand)
Well structured class, videos flowed easily from one to the next allowing me to follow along and come out with a teapot at the same stage as Antoinette's. Camera angles etc, were really good, you could see what you needed to.
Agnese Aljena (Latvia)
Thank you, Antoinette and Koos! I learned soooo much! And that feeling, when you start to feel and are not afraid any more... My love to porcelain and ceramics is just growing to the moon (and some day will come back as well). So thank you very much!
Patricia Forst (Canada)
The course was well thought out and clearly delivered. The photography was well done, giving us great views of exactly how each pot was made. Very clear instructions and I enjoyed the little bits of humour that popped up periodically.
Laura Howe (Michigan, USA)
The videos are so well done and edited very well. There was so much covered it was hard to absorb it all. I really enjoyed the last set of videos on making the 'envelope' bowl.
Anne Vega (Florida, USA)
Marcia did a nice job teaching the course and was generous with her knowledge. She also was very open to all the questions asked and she answered quickly and thoroughly. I personally took the class to learn saggar firing and I learned so much. I really loved that part of the course and would have like to have delved a bit deeper into the process. That being said it was very informative and I am eager to start my own experiments! I will look for upcoming workshops eagerly! Thank you!
Cherri Lamarr (Colorado, USA)
I love how everything is explained and appreciate the great camera angles and close-ups to make sure I get to see everything...as if I were present in the room.
Jane Morton (Delaware, USA)
the details of the process that were shown in the videos and Antoinette's explanations were spot on. Also the ability to submit question would clear up any issues I was having. I had limited use of porcelain when I started but now it is mostly what I use. Standard porcelain and adding cottin linten to the clay. Was a great boost to me when I needed a new direction. Antoinette is very entertaining and informative willing to share her expertise with students.
Marcia Grant (Illinois, USA)
It is obvious that Antoinette has extensive knowledge and experience in working with the Diva! There are lots of tips along the way and the camerawork is excellent in showing exactly what Antoinette is trying to show and explain. Antoinette has a very relaxed approach.
Clelia Mandrilly (New York, USA)
Antoinette is a great teacher, enthusiastic and generous. As you watch the videos you can feel how she really wants to share her knowledge with the students.
Linda Lebrun (Canada)
That was a great workshop, and a lot of fun. Now that I’m back in my home studio and working with porcelain, I realize how much you taught and how much further I can push the “diva” than I was doing before.
Cheryl Herr (Iowa, USA)
This course (thrown dinnerware) is making a huge difference in how I throw. Thanks so much for showing your meticulous care in making the various pieces. Wonderful.
Faja Schroeder (Germany)
Dear Antoinette, dear Koos thank you for your wonderful course and for your help. Your course are great! I learned understand porcelain. I can make pots and vases now. And i can make my porcelain flowers now! And I can plant my porcelain flowers in porcelain pots! Without this that would be impossible! Thank you!!!
Nathanael Addison (USA)
I have been working with ceramics for a number of years and frequently seek out different methods of learning. I am taking 'Porcelain Tips for Wheel Pottery by David" and have learned so many things that I've already incorporated into my work. David's instruction of making a lid with a flange is brilliant! I've used his method and made 8 successful lids in my first 2 sessions! David also teaches how to make a spout on a large pitcher, and how to throw thin vessels, and an excellent way to work with a tall piece - even if thin and appearing 'wonky', there are finishing touches to make a fabulous piece! David is extremely clear in his teaching style. He is easy to understand, and does a great job in explaining verbally, as well as showing students how to do things. There are take-away notes after most of the weekly sessions, containing an overview of what was covered that week. The course is engaging and just as good, if not better than classroom instruction. Believe me, I replayed the flange lid lesson over and over, and by the time I was at the wheel, I was comfortable in knowing exactly how I would accomplish the task. Thank you, David for the great class!
Ann Kenworthy (Massachusetts, USA)
I'm taking David's course (have also taken three of Antoinette's) and am so pleased with the video instruction, Koos' excellent video shots, and the cool tool tips. David is a wonderful teacher, and I've really enjoyed the series. His critiques have been so helpful, too. They even inspired me to go back to basics and just throw a series of cylinders to work on my heavy bottom problem, and it worked.
Jodi Fox (Pennsylvania, USA)
I learned so much from this class! I had previously treated stoneware and porcelain as the same bodies, which explains my frustrations with it. After watching your videos, I successfully threw and trimmed with real porcelain. Adding vinegar to the water makes throwing much more pleasurable.
Amy Strapec (Pennsylvania, USA)
Thanks again Antoinette and Koos for your beautiful spirits! Antoinette, we are already thinking of how we will get to another workshop with you either up in the north or back in Brasstown!
Rynie Tredoux (South Africa)
I enrolled for all Antoinettes classes so far, and i enjoyed every minute of them all, and i have learned so much from her. Would love to be able to buy the online videos if that would have been possible.
Appreciate it a lot that Antoinette took the time and effort to share her fast expertise with us all. Thank you so much and keep those classes coming.
Michelle Maki (Georgia USA)
You have taught me so very much in these past few weeks! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your knowledge and the way you express the process through the videos! Your course is what I expected when I took my initial pottery course, however that was not to be. My questions were always answered with resistance. I wish I could express how much I really value your talent!
Evelyne Schoenmann (Switzerland)
I'd like to say a few words about the e-course. I'am one of Antoinette's students in her e-course classes. When I first heard about the course, I wanted to join, but was thinking: "how can that work? We students are scattered all over the world. How shall we listen and work as if together in a room?" But I knew Antoinette already from LinkedIn and so I trusted her. She and her husband Koos did a great job, I must admit! We get plenty of information about the origin of porcelain (did you all know porcelain is man made?) and about its characteristic. We get videos where we can see Antoinette working and telling us how to do things, just as if we were in the same room! We have the porcelain tea room on fb to meet and chat and discuss questions/answers. We get homework and can upload pictures of it, so that Antoinette can see our problems (or our success). She is teaching with heart, soul and passion! We all are very content with the course.
Thank you, Antoinette, for making it possible!
Monique Vanmollekot (Belgium)
Antoinette, I just watched the videos of this week. Thanks for the great videos. YOU ARE AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER. I ve taken potery courses in the Academy of Arts + several training sessions with different potters, I never had such a detailed training and explanations with such knowledge sharing. Nobody explained to me to avoid slip with porcelain ....after e xplanations, it s so evident, you are right.Thank you so much.
Emrys Le Roux (New Jersey, USA)
I have to say I am very very pleased with this class so far. I have taken clay building and porcelain classes and no one has gone into as much detail as you have in the few classes we've had so far. Thank you, I look back now and see I didn't get my money's worth but with your class I am. Will be a forever student of yours. Thank you for such an opportunity.
Ann Kenworthy (Massachusetts, USA)
First, Antoinette is a superb teacher, and Koos is a master videographer. He gets detailed shots of hand positions, etc. And I can watch to my heart's content until I understand. If you expand your enterprise by presenting other clay artists, please be sure they are as well prepared and articulate as Antoinette, who has clearly put a great deal of thought into her presentations. As a learner, I found the flow impeccable, the video shots amazing. Compared with the videos on Ceramics Art Daily, for instance, the videography is waaaaaaay superior. I think it's because you take the time to edit carefully, and it makes all of the difference in the quality of the teaching. The balance between design and production is also wonderful.
Valorie Scherr (CA, USA)
I know all the information you've shared in this class has already made me a better potter. Thanks soooo much!
Mary Wilson (MD,USA)
I'm really glad I took this e course..Understanding Porcelain. I had thought I should take a more advanced course since I already work with porcelain. But I'm humbled by how much I learned, even a bit overwhelmed. You answered questions that I didn't even know I had and brought up my standards for porcelain work. Now that I know better I must do better. Thank You Antoinette.
Martha Cheney (Ed. D MS, USA)
She is a highly skilled teacher who shared her knowledge and skills patiently. Regardless of the setting, Antoinette’s passion about pottery is obvious. She is a well-prepared presenter who accepts responsibility for engaging students of all ages in the creative process.
Brenda Wolf (Canada)
I'm now totally obsessed with trimming my pieces as thin as possible. Not sure that's a good idea for functional ware! I'm spending far too much time trimming but once I see a peek of that pinky orange glow peeking through I can't stop myself! In telling myself that I need to push the limits. Hopefully I'll learn soon enough what can and can't be done. I guess I'll see what happens in the firing.
Elaine Rebman (GA, USA)
I did not know what to expect but the class was far above my expectations. The amount of clear and and detailed information was most generous. The information on finishing was extremely helpful for me. Best wishes and thank you.
Grace Lin (CA, USA)
Thank you so much for the wonderful envelope instruction, Antoinette! smile emoticon It's very inspiring to see how you create such beautiful pieces. I really like it when you touch on the subject of how to make the pieces pleasing to the eye, paying attention to the proportion, size, angel, form,...etc., in addition to the technique.
Annie Clough (Australia)
I have learnt soooo much from your teaching Antoinette, that I can carry over to all my pottery pieces, I cannot thank you enough. And don't forget Koos, who also has given me support when I needed it. I can't wait to start the next course.

The class was very well planned. The text portion of the class was concise and gave excellent explanations of the work to be done. It included clear descriptions of what was expected and how to follow through to achieve success in the class. The information was accurate and very easy to follow. The notes included all the information necessary for a very successful class and were easily followed.
Comments about the teacher.
Antoinette was very easy to follow. She gave clear directions and was very good about answering all questions. I have been a potter for more than forty years and was very impressed with her skills as a teacher and as a potter. Antoinette’s own work is exquisite. She very generously shared her knowledge with the class. I learned far more than I had expected to.
It is not often one gets the opportunity take a class with such an outstanding teacher and I was delighted to have been able to participate.
Do you have any suggestions?
I have no suggestions, just an apology. I am sorry that I didn’t submit any work. I had a baking accident the day the class began and badly burned my index finger. I was unable to work with clay for the next two weeks, and even then it was pretty awkward for a while. I followed along with the lessons and web site watching the videos and looking at the work of the other’s in the class but had nothing to show in a timely manner for myself.
All this was due to our big dog that came hurrying into the kitchen just as I was removing a large sheet of cookies from the oven. In my attempt at keeping Charlie from running into the oven door and burning himself I bumped my finger on the inside of the very hot oven .
I am just making my teapots now and am quite enjoying it. I had never realized how much fun handbuilding could be.
Thank you so much for allowing me to take this class. i am definately far behind but have thoroughly enjoyed it. I will send pictures when I have them completed.

Dympna Painter (Australia)
I have just finished watching the pinch pot teapot classes and wanted to say how informative they are and how much I enjoyed it. I feel I have learned so very much and wish to thank you for sharing your knowledge. I think your class was excellent value, thank you
Glenda Simpson (Georgia, USA)
Antoinette, you teaching is so clear and easy to understand. I am throwing better than I ever have.
Ann Richards (England)
I am absolutely loving the course - thank you. My throwing and trimming has really improved over the last four weeks.
Elizabeth Recsy (Switzerland)
I’m very happy that I’ve found your excellent courses. For me every video teaches new things or answers the questions I had. You’re very detailed in your explanations and that’s a huge help for someone like me, with no previous knowledge.
Liz Allen (Maine, USA)

Comments about the class contents.
